Statistics say nine out of ten murders are committed by someone the victim knows. So when Steph Ryder is found dead with her head caved in, Detective Sergeant Allie Shenton begins investigations close to home, starting with the victim’s family and friends.
As each one lies to cover up their actions on that fateful night, Allie becomes convinced husband Terry Ryder has something to hide – and he’s not the only one. Powerful, ambitious and charming, Allie’s attraction to the successful businessman grows with each interrogation, risking both her job and marriage. Can Allie uncover the truth before her life not only falls apart, but before she ends up a victim, too?
Writing is all about a journey, right? For me, the journey has been long and full of ups and downs, but I’ve also learnt so much along the way. A lot of you have followed me via this blog, Facebook and twitter and you’ll know that I’ve been trying to get a book deal for some time; in fact, my heels are almost completely worn out at this stage!

You may have noticed that over the last few months I’ve been quiet about my writing and my efforts to get published. You’ve seen my book reviews and author interviews but I’ve shared very little about what’s been happening for me in the background. The reason for that is because I so badly wanted to be able to share some good news with you. At the end of June, I sent my latest crime novel, TAUNTING THE DEAD, out on submission but unfortunately, it hasn’t sold to a publisher yet.
Now as much as this has devastated me, I’ve tried to keep positive about it online. But press your index finger and your thumb together – I’ve just come that close to getting a deal from a reputable publisher. The editor who read my manuscript was a lady I’d met before and we’d really hit it off. She seemed to just ‘get me’ and my writing and I was really excited at the thought of working with her. But unfortunately, it just wasn’t to be.
Publishing as we know it is changing rapidly. In some respects this is great for me but in others, as the slots for print books become less and less each year, it makes my dream more and more unreachable. But it doesn’t have to be that way. There are other avenues to explore other than the traditional route and one of those is self publishing. Many authors are pursuing this route and their books are being widely read and reviewed. Some are getting decent sales figures too.
So I’ve decided to take a positive approach and be instrumental in making my own dream come true. I’ve released TAUNTING THE DEAD as an ebook. I’m confident that with a great cover, blurb and sample to download beforehand, people might just like it enough to buy and recommend it to others.
I want to say a huge thank you to my friends and writer buddies who have and still do support me along the way with chats, meets, emails, blog comments, tweets and direct messages. You all know who you are. I would have given up my dream a long time ago if it wasn’t for your support.
So here it is – I’m unleashing my words into the world and I hope any of you who read it will enjoy!

Yay! We can read it...off to download now. Can't wait.

Woooooooo! Well, I've been lucky enough to read it and you know what I think -- it's gripping, thrilling and all those horrible cliched words! But true! I'm jealous of your story-telling, lady! xx
ReplyDeleteThanks Liz! So thrilled for your support x
ReplyDeleteAnd you, Talli, my lovely friend who has been unbelievably supportive. I wouldn't have done this if it wasn't for your kind words and erm, lots of help! Thank you, for everything x
Fantastic idea Mel. Best of luck to you! x
ReplyDeleteWay to go, Mel! Good for you getting proactive. Best of luck to you x
ReplyDeleteThanks Tammy. It was a tough decision but let's hope it works out well. x
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on the release of 'Taunting the Dead' which is now sitting on my Kindle. Well done on getting your work out there.
ReplyDeleteThanks Chris, that means a lot. I've known you since, like, forever! x
ReplyDeleteHooray! I feel like a proud Mom this morning (but not in age!!). I couldn't be happier for you. It's about time you unleashed that talent into the world. I can't wait to hear all the fabulous reviews rolling in - Taunting the Dead is such a brilliant read and I'm sure you'll be told that again and again over the coming weeks. Lots of luck and love. xxx
ReplyDeleteWhen Mel is signing copies of this book two years from now at the Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival, this blogpost will become a collectors item.
ReplyDeleteThis is where the journey to best-selling crime author began.
Maria, where would I be without you? I remember when you first read it, printed out on paper, with so many gaps in it that it should have been unreadable. I remember you ALWAYS encouraging me, no matter what, 'yes, but it's good, so' I remember chatting to you about it when we first met in London to go to the book fair. I remember it all and I will always remember it. Thanks so much x
ReplyDeleteJames, thanks so much. When I'm signing copies at Harrogate, I hope you're there so I can return the favour and buy you a drink!
ReplyDeleteAnd you're so right, maybe this is the beginning of another journey rather than a continuation. Time will tell. x
Congratulations, Mel. I cannot wait to read it and speak with you in January about this new and exciting path.
ReplyDeleteDo you know, I'm almost jealous of you being able to do this! I probably shouldn't say this, but the publishing industry is changing so much that the indie model looks like the way forward. The very best of luck and very well done.
ReplyDeleteLesley, thank you so much for that comment. You will never know how much it means. It took me such a long time to pluck up the courage as I thought I was a failure. If it's good enough to publish, someone would want it, right? So for me, that was great to hear. The industry is changing, hopefully to our advantage. Thanks. x
ReplyDeleteMel, Having already read some of your work on your website, I'm thrilled that I can now download the book. Congratulations!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Claire! Hope you enjoy it! x
ReplyDeleteThanks Laura, didn't notice you sneak in there! Yes, it will be a different hat for me for a while, I've never been 'interviewed' yet! x
ReplyDeleteHappy P-Day, Mel!!!! I'm so looking forward to reading this. It's on my Kindle, ready for the Christmas break. Well done for taking control and putting this out yourself - good decision. I wish you and it every success. xx
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Kath, that means a lot to me. xx
ReplyDeleteCongratulations Mel! I know how difficult it is to make a decision like this but the beauty of publishing/self-publishing now is that you don't have to close any doors no matter what you do. I'll definitely be downloading this to my (Mum's!) Kindle over Christmas. Looking forward to read what I'm sure will be a great book! :-D
ReplyDeleteCongrats Mel!! So excited for you!
ReplyDeleteThan you so much Catherine. It was a tough decision, I know you made it too. But fingers crossed, it's the right one. x
ReplyDeleteThanks Juliette - and look forward to having you on my blog in the new year x
Good luck Juliette.
ReplyDeleteOh wow, how exciting Mel - and what a great cover! I'll be downloading a copy immediately and I hope many others do too. You're such a talented writer and deserve to be widely read.
ReplyDeleteLots and lots of luck, and good for you for making this decision.
I may well be doing the same thing in the near future xx
Thanks! I really wanted to let EVERYONE I know, including you, about it but it just smacked of 'buy my book' no matter how I worded it.
ReplyDeleteAnd I think YOU definitely should. You should!
I tried to post from work, but it wouldn't let me.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! I can't wait to read your book. Here's to many, many sales. x
Congratulations, how very exciting for you!

ReplyDeleteMel - proud of you cos it takes guts, to NEVER give up and to keep on going. U will sell tons and as soon as I get kindle I shall be reading it - I can't wait. This is just the beginning WAF girl. When we meet I shall tell you my publishing rejection stories - we all have them and we all get there in the end ...as I say, this is just the beginning :)
ReplyDeleteDenise, we all have them, don't we? Rejection stories. Thank you so much for your comment. No one will ever realise how important it is to me. All of them. There are a few people who have chosen to stay quiet over my news...
ReplyDeleteI shall never give up - indeed I've had a lot of interest from local press, so we shall see. Thanks so much for your support, fellow WAF girl x
